What catches my attention about the opening of the 91st Paris Motor Show is how much of the future arrives carrying something from the past. The show opened for the press on October 12 at Porte de Versailles, with the public following on October 13, and the announcements have that familiar motor-show mixture of engineering, theatre and optimism. Everyone has a new chapter to announce. Everyone is ready for tomorrow. Yet some of the most interesting cars reach backwards for their names, their proportions and the little visual details that make us recognize them before we have read a word about their batteries. I rather like that. A car should give you something to respond to before it asks you to understand its operating system.

The J.P. Morgan Auto Conference ran on August 12 and 13 at the bank’s new global headquarters, the 60-story JPMorganChase Tower at 270 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Two days of fireside chats, no product reveals, no show floor. Just CFOs sitting across from equity analysts explaining what the numbers mean.

It’s the least glamorous automotive event of the year and often the most useful. Executives who spend press conferences talking about design language spend these sessions talking about launch costs and warranty accruals, and the picture that emerges is a lot more honest than anything you’ll hear at a motor show.

Kia America delivered 72,703 vehicles in April 2026, a 3 percent dip versus the same month a year ago — a comparison made difficult by elevated April 2025 demand — but the headline number understates a broader story of structural momentum. Through the first four months of 2026, Kia has moved 279,718 units, a 2 percent gain over the same period in 2025 and a new year-to-date sales record for the brand.

Subaru of America sold 52,733 vehicles in April 2026, a 5.9 percent decline versus April 2025, continuing a year-to-date pattern that has the brand trailing prior-year totals by 12.7 percent through the first four months — 194,683 units against 222,968 a year ago. The headline numbers are soft, but the model-level story is more selective than the aggregate suggests.

Forester held the volume lead for the fourth consecutive month, moving 17,837 units. Crosstrek posted its best April ever at 15,667 units, up 4.9 percent year-over-year. Outback, at 10,552 units, remains a stable contributor despite an 8.3 percent monthly decline and a steep 26.9 percent YTD shortfall — a number that warrants attention as one of the brand’s historically strongest nameplates.
